International Conference on Marine Sciences
Background
The Southeast Asian Seas are the centre of marine biodiversity, and the diversity of the marine biota is potential source for various industrial developments, such as foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals and bioenergy. However, this region is under high human induced stress, caused by overexploitation of marine resources for fisheries and ornamental trade, as well as sedimentation and pollution. Other threats are due to natural phenomena, such as global warming. The change of species comp...osition may have an influence on the resilience of a whole ecosystem to disturbances and changing environmental conditions. By assessing the biodiversity (ecosystem, species, and gene) and the connectivity among marine organism’s population conclusions about their state and probability of resilience/resistance to disturbances and changing conditions can be made.
Marine sciences and technology including marine biology, molecular taxonomy and biodiversity, marine biotechnology and bioremediation, oceanography and related area are the key tools for the exploration and industrial development of the marine potential. Collaboration among scientists in this area is a key success for the above purposes, and their collaboration interregional and interdisciplinary in marine science is expected to foster research activity and its development, especially in tropical regions.
Objective
Catalyze research in particular among Southeast Asian scientists and provide opportunities for researchers to share their experiences and information on the current research activities and its development on marine sciences and technology.
Venue
The symposium will be held at IPB International Convention Center, Bogor, Indonesia
Important dates
• Pre-registration opening: from August 1, 2012 (Please send a short e-mail contains expression of interest to committee)
• Early registration deadline: March 01, 2013

Topic
In this conference, a number of questions will be addressed:
1. Why marine biodiversity and connectivity are important?
2. How to measure ecological and genetic connectivity?
3. Which factors influence the status of marine biodiversity?
4. What is the importance of marine connectivity in designing and improving MPA?
5. How marine biodiversity assures food security, and enhance human health and welfare?
